The government of Iran recently announced plans to deport up to two million undocumented Afghans.
Between January 1st and June 30th, 2025, Iran forcibly deported 714,572 Afghans. Thousands of families have already been uprooted, with growing concern that the Iranian regime is specifically targeting vulnerable groups, women and children among them, leaving them destitute and with nowhere to turn as they are forced to leave
In the month of June alone 250,000 people were forced to leave, showing an increase in the deportation.
Afghanistan was already grappling with the impact of international sanctions when Pakistan began deporting 1.7 million undocumented Afghan refugees. Now, its western neighbor, Iran, has followed suit, announcing plans to expel all Afghan migrants as well.
