Quick background:

Due to climate change Afghanistan has been experiencing very harsh weather that has resulted in heavy storms, flash floods and severe weather events.

On the 15th of July 2024, Nangarhar province in Afghanistan was hit with heavy storms, this resulted in flash floods across the province, the severe weather event resulted in 45 people being killed and 300 injured.

Majority of the injuries and casualties were in the Sheikh Misry district in Jalalabad city, Nangarhar Province.

Due to decades of conflict Afghanistan is one of the least prepared countries when it comes to responding to extreme climate events.

Families standing next to their demolished homes in Sheikh Misry Camp, Jalalabad, Nangarhar province – Revive Afghanistan NZ

Solution:

Revive Afghanistan NZ is a registered charity based out of Auckland, New Zealand, we are always raising funds through our Emergency Relief campaign, funds are allocated to an Emergency Relief fund, this is utilised for our emergency relief efforts.

What was Revive Afghanistans response to Flood relief?

We visited the families impacted by these recent flash floods, while conducting our surveys and discussing with families, we saw the situation was very dire, families lost almost everything in this floods, most their household items being washed away, other households were either damaged or destroyed.

Families had lost family members and when we were asking what was needed, they advised that first priority was food, then shelter and access to power so they could charge devices to see in the dark and to at least keep cool in the extreme heat that Nangarhar province was experiencing.

With shelters costing over $200 per family, we decided the best route to take was provide our “Emergency Relief Food Packs”, initially these packs were going to include the food items that would support a family in need, however we decided instead of trying to reach more people in this case, we would add in our “Emergency Solar packs for the families in need too.

Emergency Relief Packs included:

1) Emergency Food Packs

Food packs included items to give families access to food that would cover a family for 1 month up to 2 months

Packs included the following items:

  • Large Flour (50KG)
  • High quality Medium Rice
  • Oil
  • Sugar
  • Tea
  • Lentils
  • Beans
  • Salt

2) Emergency Solar Packs

Solar packs gave families access to a source of power, these solar panels can power lights, can charge other items in a household and even provide a source of cooling for the extreme hot weather.

Packs included the following items:

  • Large Solar Panel with cabling
  • Battery

The situation was very dire.

One family we visited, the young girl mentioned how they had guests at their home for their newborn, and they were all in the room, the young kids were by the door watching the large storm, and due to the heavy rain the whole roof collapsed on all the guests, the newborn and their family members, they lost 13 family members in that one room alone.

We met countless families who had similar stories.
